Kathryn Elizabeth (Katie) Rice, nee Burnes, age 40, of Glen Ellyn, beloved wife of Dana, loving mother of Jack, Brooks, and Caroline, cherished daughter of Pat and Jim Burnes, dear sister of Andy (Lisa), aunt to Avett, daughter-in-law of Sophie Rice and sister-in-law of Angela (Gareth) Bell. Her immediate family is surrounded by a loving extended family of aunts, uncles, cousins, and dear friends.

Katie took on every new adventure in her life with positivity, energy, an unbreakable spirit and her trademark smile. Graduating from Battle Creek (MI) Lakeview High School, in 1996, Katie was an ever enthusiastic member of the swim team, on the school newspaper staff and president of the Student Senate. Katie attended Michigan State University, where she made lasting friendships as a member of Kappa Delta Sorority. At MSU she also met the love of her life, Dana Rice. They began their married life together in Chicago, where Katie’s professional career at Leo Burnett saw her as a VP in Account Management then in Human Resources, guiding the talent development of members of the Account team. Her unique ability to identify and grow talent impacted the careers and lives of many.

But what mattered most to Katie was her family and the loving home she and Dana created. Hockey and baseball mom extraordinaire, Katie never missed a chance to be Jack and Brooks’ biggest fan, even in her illness. Katie took equal joy in ballet class and library time with Caroline, watching the spirited little girl who was the answer to her dreams for a daughter.

Katie has impacted her community of Glen Ellyn in ways that will live on long beyond her passing, in the friendships and care she has given to everyone whose lives she has touched. Katie had a way of making everyone feel special, through her kind words, her easy smile and her ability to make every interaction feel like that time together mattered. For her family and her friends, her gift of making the little things in life feel big will be dearly missed. Katie cherished her family and friendships above all, reflected in the outpouring of love and heartache felt around her passing.
