GLEN ELLYN — George Lessmeister, 77, died Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2017, at his home in Glen Ellyn, IL, following a battle with colon cancer.
He was born April 4, 1940, in Plavaina, Yugoslavia, to Eva (Tetling) and Jacob Lessmeister.
As a young teenager, George emigrated to the U.S. in December 1956 with several of his family members and settled in Chicago. George joined the U..S. Army in 1958 and was honorably discharged in 1964. He was part of the 76th Engineer Company, Fourth U.S. Army, as a Specialist Technician 4.
George met Adele Grzesiak on a blind date arranged by friends, and by the end of their first date, he swore she would be his wife. They were married 55 years on Sept. 1, 2017.
After leaving the military, George pursued a career in engineering. He lived most of his adult life in Illinois, leaving for a few years in the late 1960s to work for New York Twist Drill and live in Long Island, NY.
Shortly after returning to Illinois, George started his own tool and die company, Glen Tool, which he owned and operated in Broadview for more than 10 years. He retired in the late 1990s.
In his retirement, George poured his creativity and engineering precision into woodworking, converting the garage into a mini shop.
George sold his work at craft shows and created treasured décor, furniture and more for his family. He also had an affinity for trains, the latest electronic gadgets and cameras/video cameras, which became hobbies for him.
George is survived by his loving wife, Adele; two sons, George (Rebecca) Lessmeister of Platte City, MO, and James Lessmeister of Glen Ellyn; two daughters, Cheron Lessmeister of Naperville and Susan (John) Reidy of Decatur; and five grandchildren, Zachary (Andressa) Lessmeister of Ames, IA; Joshua Lessmeister of Platte City; and Emma Reidy, Claire Reidy and Annalise Reidy, all of Decatur.
George was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Jacob (Margarita) Lessmeister and Anton (Terese) Lessmeister, and sister Ann Kraus.
