Peter Edward Solomon was born in Rangoon ,British Burma. He was raised in London, England. His favorite sport at Hendon County Grammar School was throwing the javelin. Peter was an avid cyclist and most summers he, along with friends, cycled all over England. They pitched a tent and attempted to cook meals over rain-soaked fires.
Art was Peter’s passion. At the age of 18, he attended Hornsey College of Art. At this time, summers were spent roaming museums and art galleries, sketch book in hand. When Peter graduated with honors, he entered the world of advertising. Starting as a graphic artist, his fine mind and amazing creativity helped him to rise in the ranks.
At this time he added another passion - sports cars. Peter’s pride and joy was a 1949 MGTC. It was bright red. He named her Katie.
Driving Katie all over Europe was fun. His future wife, Lucille, joined in his adventures. One of their challenges was to see if Katie could cope with mountain exploring in Austria. That car was amazing.
Peter and Lucille were married in 1961. They spent their honeymoon in Switzerland where Peter gained a new passion - skiing. Skiing became a lifelong fun activity. It’s said he was the oldest man attempting the black slopes on Mount Baker.
When Peter’s uncle (Professor of Economics at Stanford University, US Economist)) came to London recruiting students from Oxford University, he suggested a new adventure to Peter and Lucille. Work and play in the United States. Up for the challenge, Peter and Lucille went to Glasgow, Scotland to catch a cargo ship to Los Angeles.
Within a month In Los Angeles. Peter was being challenged by American advertising which he thoroughly enjoyed. In 1963, he was recruited by an agency in Appleton, Wisconsin to work on the Braniff account. It was here his grin became even broader. He became a father first to Lisa Jacqueline and then to Nicole Marie.
Chicago, Illinois was Peter and his family’s next stop. His home base was Chicago but he directed advertisements all over the country and internationally. He had been interested in architecture in his studies at Hornsey. Frank Lloyd Wright rekindled his fascination. From beautiful structures on earth, he then looked to the skies and became an avid student of astronomy.
Peter worked in advertising for the rest of his career. He became a Creative Director, Vice President and was Ogilvy and Mather’s Man of the Year. Peter worked on ads staring Cher, Phil Collins, Tom Selleck, Suzanne Sommers, Richard Petti among others, winning Gold and Bronze Effies, and other awards for excellence in advertising.
Peter died at his home in Glen Ellyn, surrounded by family and friends. Father George of St. Marks Church gave him last rites. He passed on April 10th at 4:01 p.m. He will be sorely missed by many.
