Obituary

Harold W. Gaede, 90, passed away Nov. 6 in Wheaton, IL. He was born Sep. 16, 1928 in Elgin, IL and soon after moved to Wheaton. After a stint in the Navy, he attended the Univ. of Wyoming and graduated from Bradley University in 1952. In 1952, he also married Joan Mize, his partner in life and business. Their store,"Gaede's," was a Wheaton institution for over 50 years, starting as a boys store in 1954. Over the years, the store moved and expanded twice, ending as a fine men's and women's clothier. His belief was that in order for his business to thrive, the community must thrive, and so began his dedication to community service. He has served as President and board member of the B.R. Ryall YMCA, Board of Governors and member of the Chairman's Club of Central DuPage Hospital, President and board member of the IL Retail Merchant's Assoc., Vice-president Wheaton Library board, Little League board, President of Wheaton Chamber of Commerce, St. Paul's Lutheran church council, and Lions Club member to name a few. He hosted for years an annual Fun(d) Run benefiting Wheaton Youth Outreach, runners having to wear shirts ties and jackets, the more outrageous the better, with their running shorts. He also started a long-running campaign, "Yea Wheaton," which recognized the city's most dedicated volunteers and their organizations. He himself was recognized over the years for his civic mindedness garnering such awards as the Jaycees Man of the Year, Kiwanis Citizen of the Year, Mason's Community Builder Award, Lion's Club Lifetime Service Award and Melvin Jones Fellow, and IL Retail Merchant of the Year.
Many happy summers were spent at his home on Powers Lake,WI. He enjoyed sailing, and for years, if he wasn't racing one of his boats, he was most likely judging a race. He served as Commodore of the Yacht Club and is honored by still having a regatta in his name. He had a pilots license and for a while had a small plane. We all fondly recall "buzzing over" the nudist camp near the lake. He was known for his wonderful sense of humor. The last several decades, his winters were spent in Vero Beach, FL. There he enjoyed golfing, watching the ocean from his balcony, and most of all visits from his grandchildren. His was a life well lived. He was a kind and generous man that made a difference and had fun along the way. He will be missed.
He is survived by his wife Joan, daughter Susan Murphy (Marlin), son Bill (Salli), granddaughters Morgan and Haley Gaede, Jillian and Camryn Murphy, and brother Howard (Sue). A Memorial Visitation at Williams-Kampp Funeral Home, 430 E. Roosevelt Rd. Wheaton, IL from 10 A.M. until time of Memorial Service at 12:00 Saturday, December 1, 2018.
